This strange snake bite news story was interesting but in the last paragraph it was stated that some people could be allergic to corn snake saliva, this could be so but in my experience of keeping and knowing people that have kept corn snakes since 1992 I have never heard of any cases of this happening.
Corn snakes: not necessarily easily identified as people have bred them in captivity and created many with different colours and patterns, they come from North America and have been easily bred in captivity for years.
They have been a favourite to buy and keep because they are one of the easiest and usually docile of snakes to care for, they are often bought by parents for children but they can live for 20yrs or more so sadly are rarely kept as pets for the whole of their lives, once the child leaves home the parents who just bought the snake as a pet for the child and not a family pet don’t want it anymore. We have 21 corn snakes living in the sanctuary it’s becoming increasingly difficult to re-home them as peoples fads have now moved on to fancy breeds of Royal Python which are also now being bred different colours and patterns – this problem will come to a head in the future as Royal Pythons can live for up to 40yrs!!
Please buy a snake as a full term pet not a fad, they need a small amount of attention and that is one of the problems people get disinterested in them after a time leave them in their vivariums in solitary confinement (no weather, no other animals moving around) and then wonder why they suddenly bite a large strange hand that enters their home. “it started biting me” my reply “you stopped handling it” they really only need to be handled once a month to remember your aroma and know that it’s you.
