Snake work:
Our only way of creating funds for the sanctuary is by taking them out to work.
There are lots of plus’s:
- Snakes get more stimulation than they can get in their vivariums
- In the Summer months at outside events they can experience the outside world and breath fresh air.
- People of all ages learn lots about snakes that they didn’t know before.
- People overcome their fears and phobias.
- People find out that contrary to popular belief snakes are actually therapeutic to handle.
- Children have lots of fun meeting the snakes.

This our second year at this event, we are already booked for next year.
The snakes, Sue and all the volunteers love this type of event.
Wanstead – Music in the Park

Wanstead – Music in the Park: We have run our snake encounters for approx 10yrs at this event the first one Sue also performed a snake dance.
The organisers have decided that this year will be the last, they say the red tape is getting worse each year.
The snakes will miss it as it gives them the opportunity to breathe some air, smell trees and grass, just to experience the great outdoors gives them so much pleasure.
Lets hope that we can get a similar event in North Essex or Suffolk in the future.
We will also miss it financially as we have always been looked after. Sue won’t miss the packing up of the car and the long drive back to where we used to live.
Sue twisted her ankle badly a week before so the driving was done by George her better half, Stacey, Kimba, Sue’s Son Reece and his lady friend Helen all came along to help although Stacey also had a foot problem so we managed to squeeze in two folding chairs this year and some crutches, couldn’t miss the last one. 🙂
Kimba is snuggling our biggest Boa Constrictor “Dobi,” these events are great for him as they are usually the only time he gets out, he weighs 18 kilos so is a bit heavy for Sue to manage alone.
People overcome their fears, learn lots about snakes and have plenty of fun.

Snake Encounters Essex and beyond

Snake Encounters Essex and beyond – there was a problem with the website for a while so there have been no new postings since July!!
We’re are here again with a lot of catching to do. We have been booked for lots more local work, such a pleasure not to have to drive too far.
Here’s a list of presentations that haven’t been posted:
- The snakes met up with 1st Lawford Guides at The Venture Centre, Manningtree, Essex in June.
- We did our regular yearly visits to All Saints Church, Inmans Row, Woodford Green Essex for the Holiday Club there and Poolside Manor Holiday Club at Finchley, London.
- Myself and my volunteers had a great time at Chigwell Row Campsite – we take 20/30 snakes for these outside events so everyone gets a chance to handle a snake and get over their fear if they want to.
- We attended Harwich Primary School for the second time – who had the benefit of our 2015 special price for local schools £1 per child (costs less than an ice-cream) and I had the benefit of just crossing the road to go there 😀
- We took the snakes to a fear busting event at Christ church Primary school in Chelsea and met Hugo Taylor from “made in Chelsea” and “Celebrity get me out of here” who was speaking to the children about fear.
- Goodmayes Primary School in Ilford called us for the 4th year running.
- We attended St Joseph’s Primary School, Dovercourt once more for their 6oth celebrations.
- The snakes were a big hit at Clacton Fun-Day and we were told they would love to have us back next year 🙂
- We have run presentations at Colchester Natural History Museum once more on the 29th October, looks like this will be a regular gig from now on 🙂
- Today the snakes and I attended Market School, Elmstead Market, Essex (another local)
The three albino pythons performed at the fierce festival in Birmingham it was by luck that none were in slough, the photo below shows them performing, just moving about and being themselves 😀
Public appearances

Public appearances for July and August are:
- Colchester Natural History Museum – Thurs 30 July 3 hourly presentations starting at 12noon
- Clacton Carnival Funday – Sunday 9th August between 1pm and 5pm a gazebo full of volunteers and up to 20 snakes
Looking forward educating and phobia busting lots more adults and teaching children about snakes.

Music in the Park – Wanstead 2015
We have been attending this event for approx 7yrs, this year there was a strong police presence taking charge of the snakes 😀
Our latest fundraiser is selling shed snakeskins; we bag up and label the type of snake they’re from. Some of the larger skins are ironed out flat for hanging up on the wall.

Snake Encounters at Sandringham School, St Albans
Students at Sandringham School in St Albans decided it would be fun to have lots of snakes from Snakey Sue’s Serpent Sanctuary come to visit on their Jungle day.

Snake Encounters at Harwich and Parkeston Football Club

Snake Encounters at Harwich and Parkeston Football Club: We ran this as a fundraiser, as the football club were fundraising for Essex Air Ambulance. We do sometimes pop along to a local event if we are not booked for a fee paying booking. The difficulty being that we cannot promise to turn up in case a booking comes in.
As much as we would love to do everything for free the snakes cannot be cared for without money, we ask for donations to handle the snakes so we made approx £40 for the afternoon.

Just to say thank you to you and your team for the excellent work you did on Saturday. Two children told their aunt that it was the best day they had ever had! Both adults and children were entralled by the variety of snakes you brought with you.
Overall we raised £535.00 for Christian Aid so many thanks for all your hard work

Snake Encounters at family parties

Snake Encounters at family parties: One of the best parties are family parties of all age groups, there are plenty of adults around to help with the handling of the snakes keep an eye on what the children are getting up to.
We find that adults get as much joy out of handling snakes as children do.
Outdoors is great but when the weather is hot our best place to be is under trees as they give proper shade unlike gazebos which hold the heat.
When we are outdoors in the Summer we take bowls for water so that we can cool the snakes down, the children are amazed when they see the snakes in the water.
We can also allow certain types of snakes to lay on the grass and sense real ground although it’s important to keep touching them otherwise they can feel alone and frightened in a strange place.
We run parties for all age groups – here are some photographs of people having fun handling snakes outdoors and indoors.
